Zendaya Coleman will no longer play the late R&B singer Aaliyah in a biopic for Lifetime.

Lifetime announced the news on Twitter, adding that production of Aaliyah: Princess of R&B is "currently on hold."

A source tells E! News that Zendaya pulled out of the role after problems with the film's production.  Among the issues was the difficult task filmmakers had in obtaining rights to the singer's music.  While Zendaya was "honored" to play someone who personally inspired her, she wanted to "do it right."

Aaliyah's family took issue with Lifetime's decision to go ahead with the film without approaching them.  They promised to block efforts to use Aaliyah's music in the film.

Aaliyah died in a 2001 plane crash in the Bahamas.  She was only 22-years-old.
